At Wildlife Conservation Initiative (WCI), our commitment to sustainable agriculture is evident through our focus on agroecology and organic farming practices. In Jomba Sector, Nyabihu District, Western Province of Rwanda, WCI has partnered with a large-scale passion fruit farming cooperative, which consists of 62 dedicated members. With our support, the cooperative received 2,000 passion fruit seedlings, and today, they are reaping the benefits with an impressive harvest of 8,000 tons per season. This success highlights the impact of integrating sustainable farming practices into rural agriculture.

WCI’s approach emphasizes organic farming, where the use of natural methods, such as composting, plays a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility. We also focus on weed cutting and erosion control, ensuring that the land remains productive and protected from degradation. Planting passion fruit trees has been a key component of this project, contributing not only to the cooperative’s economic growth but also to the environmental sustainability of the region.

Our WCI office serves as a live demonstration of these practical conservation techniques. We showcase Soil Health Management practices that ensure long-term soil productivity. Our Water Management strategies are designed to optimize the use of water resources, crucial for both rural and urban farming. Agroforestry is another cornerstone of our approach, integrating trees and shrubs into farming systems to enhance biodiversity and resilience.

Additionally, WCI promotes Urban Farming as a means of securing food supply and greening urban spaces. We advocate for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), a holistic approach that reduces reliance on chemical pesticides by combining biological, cultural, and mechanical control methods. Through these initiatives, WCI is advancing agroecology, ensuring that agriculture in Rwanda is not only productive and sustainable but also a model for conservation and environmental stewardship.
